I recently held the first ever Wimzie Prints Greeting Cards open house. It was kind of a last minute decision to do so and I didn’t get the invitations out soon enough for a large turn out but a few friends showed up and we had a great time. In the future I think I’ll collaborate with other artists to present a greater variety of items and to attract a larger crowd. Here are some photos of my display.

Since the Wimzie Prints mission is to “gladden hearts and inspire smiles” I sometimes like to post fun ideas for family entertainment. My family decided to do something a little different this Christmas Eve for dessert. My husband and I are huge fans of the hit Food Network TV series “Iron Chef America” and we’ve always wanted to have our own competition. Since we hosted Christmas this year it was the perfect opportunity. The teams were “Men vs. Women” and mom was appointed the judge. She also chose the secret ingredients.

Each team had one hour to create a dessert of their choice using the secret ingredients (Betty Crocker Pound Cake Mix and Nestle Toll House Peanut Butter and Milk Chocolate Morsels) and any other ingredient or item found in my kitchen.

As soon as the secret ingredient was revealed the men immediately descended upon my kitchen like a pack of vultures. They were throwing whatever they could find into my blender along with the cake mix. “How about bananas? Hot cocoa mix! Rice Crispies?…” It was very interesting to watch.

Us girls, on the other hand, spent at least 5 minutes deliberating what to do. We wanted to mix it up a bit and make something other than a cake. We decided upon some little cookies made from the cake mix, with a cream cheese frosting that included the chocolate and peanut butter chips.

The men were done in a matter of minutes and had their cake in the oven to bake. Then they proceeded to play 45 minutes of tennis on the Wii.

The women took the time to make a test cookie, try different presentation options, pick out some nice china, etc.

The men took an interesting approach to the presentation of their dish. I was surprised at what an active role my dad played in the competition. He did the topping all by himself. It consisted of melted peanut butter and chocolate chips, sliced bananas and an entire jar of raspberry jam. It was served in the pan with an all American Diet Pepsi on the side.

The women took considerable time preparing the presentation of their dish for the judge. Each cookie was topped with a drizzling of melted dark chocolate, followed by a dab of frosting and then sprinkled with pomegranate seeds (Tessa’s great idea!) It was served on our Great Grandma Leavitt’s china with a saucer of ice cold milk.

Mom was a very good judge. I presented the Women’s dish. She thought the presentation was lovely and the tartness of the pomegranate seeds complemented the sweetness of the cookie nicely.

The Men’s dessert was presented by my brother Josh with his usual theatrics and comedy. He wrapped a dish towel around his head and used a non-distinct Asian foreign accent, which made us all roar with laughter throughout the presentation. The judge commented on the fact that she had never been served an entire cake before. She found the cake to be quite delicious and rich.

The judge had a difficult time picking a winner because both desserts were so original and tasty. In the end the Women’s dessert was chosen as the winner because of the use of the pomegranate seeds as garnish and their thoughtful presentation.

This activity was a lot of fun for our family. I hope you’ll try it with yours and have lots of laughs like we did. Merry Christmas!

Wimzie Prints first press feature in a printed magazine!

I was so excited for Wimzie Prints to get it’s first press coverage in an actual printed magazine this week. Thanks to Editor Sandra Hosking from Inland Northwest Homes & Lifestyle magazine for mentioning Wimzie Prints holiday cards in the Design Watch section of this month’s issue.

Ever since I started writing to my first pen pal for a class project in second grade I have been fascinated with the idea of corresponding with complete strangers. So, it’s no wonder I was delighted when I came across this fun experiment online called Postcrossing.

postcard by hidenseek.etsy.com

The goal of the Postcrossing Project is to allow people to receive postcards from all over the world, for the cost of a postage stamp. The premise is that if you send a postcard, you will receive at least one back from a random Postcrosser from somewhere in the world.

Why would you want to send and receive a postcard from a complete stranger, you ask? Like me there are lots of people who enjoy receiving real mail. Bills are pretty much the only items that arrive in my mailbox these days so I thought it would be a nice surprise to receive a postcard from a random place in the world every once in awhile.

How does it work? First you must register on the Postcrossing website and request an address and postcard I.D. It is totally FREE. Then you mail the postcard (note: it costs $0.98 to send a postcard to Europe and Asia, a fact I did not know until I went to the post office to send my postcards) and wait to receive a postcard from someone else. When you receive a postcard you register it on the website and begin the process all over again.

I decided to try Postcrossing a couple weeks ago. I sent 5 postcards to 4 different European countries and one to Oregon. The woman in Oregon already received my card and registered it on the site. She even sent me a nice thank you message through the site and offered to send me a postcard also. So fun!
